Sophia Mission Institute
Promoting self-sufficiency in the Chin Hills of Burma
We have been working closely with this remarkable project in a remote village in the Chin Hills of Burma for the last 20 years. John Riches from The Balmore Trust visited their school and farm in 2014 and met with the village social development committee. Since then we have been able to raise funds for a pharmacy and house for a new village midwife.
Sophia Mission provides residential accommodation for the children from outlying villages together with a very effective programme of educational support to complement the teaching they receive at the Government school. Their former pupils are now in senior positions across Burma.
Support this year will help to establish a second Sophia Mission Institute in Kalamyo in the Sagaing region, providing boarding and tuition for 40 students being educated at the equivalent of UK year 11 GCSE level.
